​Standard carpet binding consists of a layer of material that is folded and stitched to the edges using a binding machine. Narrow binding colors normally match the rug color so they are less noticeable, providing a clean look. While wider binding colors are different to provide a contrast and elegant look. Binding widths usually range from ¾” to 1 ¼”.

Some rugs are placed in high-traffic areas and are best made with durable bindings that clean easily. Synthetic materials are often the best selection for this purpose. Decorative area rugs placed in lightly used rooms endure less wear and tear and can be adorned with more elegant and natural materials.
